Tanren City is the town located in the region Tanren. It is comprised of five portions: The Tanren City Plaza, North Gate, West Gate, South Gate, and East Gate.

When first coming up the staircase leading to the city, a Psyduck named Pat, which you met upon completing Tanren Tunnel, will continue talking with you about Tanren City.
  • Well, this is it - Tanren City!
  • A lot more cool and stylish than a drab place like Grassroot Town. Wouldn't ya say? Kya kya!
  • [Player Name]: .....
  • Wait, ya say you come from Grassroot Town?
  • Eh, I didn't mean to offend ya or anything. It's a fine place and all, but much too small 'n boring for my delicate tastes. Kya kya!
  • Here in Tanren City, we have Pokémon of all different sorts.
  • We got the explorin' types who like to train up North, the archeologists who study Tanren's vast history... and everything in between!
  • Pretty cool stuff, eh? It's like a giant berry garden full of fresh 'n exotic fruits! Not that the townfolks here are edible or anything - that'd just weird! Kya kya kya!
  • Anyway, I'm sure you'd be best off eplorin' the place for yourself.
  • As for myself, I got a reputation to keep. I'll be hangin' near my post south of here if ya ever wanna chill with the coolest Psyduck in Tanren City.
  • And why wouldn't ya? Kya kya!
  • See ya later, [Player Name]... and don't forget to watch your step. The shrubbery tends to get angry if stepped on too much.
  • Kya kya kya! Only kiddin' with ya!
  • Peculiar Pat is out! Stay cool, [Player Name] of Grassroot Town, Kya! ~
NPCs

034 Don: Exbel, huh? Last I heard the cliffs leading over there had been mangled by earthquakes and rock slides. Good to know the path's open again!

204 Hermes: Don't mind me...just a Pineco trying to make a living.

305 Larry: Say, you don't look familiar. You from outta town?

112 Ryhan: Training is my life! ...I still save time for my family, though.

028 Sasha: The districts in this city are very distinct. While my children play in the park to the west, archaeologists study the ruins in the east and strong Pokémon train endlessly in the north. Such a diverse city!

283 Surrey: This is my favorite pond in all of Tanren~! I hear that far to the east, there's a desert where they don't have any ponds! What a shame!

Tanren Bazaar

Tanren Bazaar[]

Tanren's bazaar is in a tent top right of the plaza. It contains a Kangaskhan Storage, Chimecho Assembly post and the service NPCs Xatu, Lickilicky, Togekiss, Togetic, Electivire, and Loomy. There is also Bronzong, a tutor found only in Tanren's bazaar. It will teach a Pokémon a random BP tutor move from the Generation 7 games for a colored shard. The category of the move taught depends on the color of the shard used.

Oldbark Retirement Center

Oldbark Retirement Center[]

The retirement center is below the Chimecho Assembly. It has the caretaker as well as a few old explorers. From what the caretaker says, apparently the Slowbro the player meets on their way to Tanren was from the retirement center but wandered off, and is not seen here. The retirement center's beds also heal HP and PP like an inn, but it is not a spawn point.

NPCs

040 Caretaker: I'm the caretaker for these old folks. They're a handful...and one of them often sneaks out to take walks. Drives me insane, that Slowbro!

045 Muriel: I've always wanted to explore the desert far to the east of here, but I'm afraid I'm just too old...and experienced for a sissy challenge like the desert! I'd rather explore the tundra!

003 Veron: From Grassroot, EH? You must know my good for nothing grandson, Bulby. He thinks he has it so hard...I have to deal with the horrible food here!

110 Wheeze: The air in this region is very clean compared to Exbel. Though, the air around the Tunnel is distinctly...dirtier...than elsewhere.

Cognito

Cognito[]

Cognito is an easter egg area, found above Joy's Tanren Hut in the side of the cliff, noticeable by the ground patch by it. The stairs at the end of the room take the player to the Tanren Undercity, right behind the building that houses the gang bases. The shortcut can only be used if Undercity Catacombs has been completed.

Anise's House[]

Anise's House

Anise is a Chikorita who's house is southwest of the plaza. Moving on any of the flowers in her house results in her kicking the player out, as she demands not to step on any when spoken to. Moving on any of the flowers outside her house also gives the message "A chill goes down your spine. Should you really be stepping on these flowers?".

If the flowers are stepped on, the player gets the following dialogue before being warped out of the house.

152 Anise: My... my flowers...You... stood on them... my precious beautiful, darling flowers...You... y-you... you monster!! YOU VICIOUS FIEND!!! Get out from here!! NOW!!!

NPCs

152 Anise: Welcome to my humble abode, I just love the aroma of flowers every morning. Don't you dare step on any.

West Gate[]

NPCs

156 Ann: The mayor recently decided to close off the path leading to the areas east of the city. It's always been a touch dangerous to explore the open fields, but to close the gates? What could be going on?

189 Buffy: Tanren's pretty famous for its flowers. I'm not too fond of these, personally. I'd much rather see the flowers said to only grow on top of the Dojo mountain.

027 Drew: When I grow up, I wanna be as tough as the old Dojo Master!

036 Emma: Legend has it that there is a special spring that turns the moonlight red. When that happens, the lives that lay dormant within fossils can be resurrected there. Have you found any fossils lately?

108 Merchant: Occasionally merchants from the Desert Bazaar to the southeast will stop by here and sell their wares. It's not too good of a location though, so I can see why they only rarely come.

027 Sandy: The Pokémon training in the north are so stuffy. They won't even join my tea party!

257 Ken: These history nuts get so excited about a couple of old rocks. They've forgotten the fighting spirit this city was founded on!

183 Tourist: Did you know? The museum gets some of its exhibits from these ancient chambers they found underneath the city!

008 Tourist: The archaeologists exploring the chambers below the city have been finding some weird stuff. I've heard that there're items down there made from materials we've never seen!

Locations[]

Tanren Exploration Site

Tanren Exploration Site[]

The Tanren Exploration Site is found down the pathway around the middle of the East Gate, down the underground stairs. It houses the Tanren Chambers. Each of the statues represents one of the chambers, with the stairs being the entrance to Tanren Chambers, thus representing normal. There's a storage and assembly.

NPCs

324 Kotoral: Good grief! These ruins are huge! What kind of crazy people spend so much time making these places anyway!?

274 Lakki: We sent a lot of our explorers in to investigate the ruins, but it wasn't enough. Think you could help?

Tanren Museum[]

Tanren Museum

Tanren's Museum is to the far right of the East Gate, entered through a doorway. The bottom-left of the museum has an exit that leads to the Archaeological Dig.

When the player first enters Tanren Museum, they get the following story prompt of two Pokémon talking about a hidden route somewhere in the museum:
  • Pyroar: ...
  • Pyroar: So, with Tanren Mines out of the way, we can finally resume our plan.
  • Pyroar: Supposedly, that "hidden route" must be here somewhere...
  • Salazzle: Heh! We'll just have to check out all of the ornaments here, perhaps there'll be a hidden swith or something nifty!
  • Pyroar: Just be careful... don't attract the attention of anyone here!
  • Salazzle: Right... Let's go ahead. I trust your judgment.
  • Receptionist: What was that ruckus just now...?
NPCs

281 Receptionist: Welcome to our proud Tanren Museum! Make sure to read the signs to get the most out of your time here!

162 Visitor: Museums are my favorite place to be. There's so much history and culture in one place, not to mention the mystery of it all!

Archaeological Dig[]
Archaeological Dig

The Archaeological Dig is another room in the Tanren Museum, found going out to the left of the museum's main room and nextdoor.

The main attraction here is the bottom-most vase east in this room, wherein one can use the move Rock Smash on it to access Tanren Undercity.

NPCs

105 Archaeologist: Welcome to our Archaeological Dig! Here you can personally watch us uncover priceless and fragile relics, which you should definitely not touch!

Tanren Underground

Tanren Underground

When a player goes past the vase they'll find themselves in the map that leads to the Tanren Undercity. The player will need to use Rock Climb and have beaten Tanren Mines.

The Pokémon before can be seen again, discovering the entrance to Tanren Undercity:
(You hear two Pokémon talking somewhere in the room...)
  • Pyroar: This must be it! I've checked everything here...
  • Salazzle: Heh heh! You're right! Let's try forcing our way in!
  • Pyroar: One two...
  • Pyroar: Ha! That did it!
  • Salazzle: Let's quickly slither out way in... Before that foolish Marowak notices.
  • Pyroar: We're going to be rich!

Trivia[]

  • Items cannot be dropped in the Tanren Exploration Site because there are 30 inaccessible hidden items in it.
  • Anise's name was previously Cheryl.
  • The Pineco NPC Hermes might draw its name from incorrect depictions of the caduceus (staff associated with the classical Greek deity) showing it topped by a pinecone. This might be due to the thyrsus (token of Dionysus) getting confused with the caduceus.
