Welcome to the F.A.Q of the Pokémon Mystery Universe wiki. This page covers several questions asked (or thought) frequently, whether it be about the wiki or the game itself.

Wiki Related

Can I edit/make pages?

Yes; this is a wiki. By nature, they are community-driven and open for anyone to contribute.

Before you do so, we have written rules that aren't that long or complicated, so do give them a read.

Can I make a page for my guild?

See P.MysteryUniverse Wiki:Manual of Style#Personal Areas.

There's something wrong or not here, what can I do?

You can try fixing/adding it yourself, putting it on the P.MysteryUniverse Wiki:Information Dump, or reaching out.

Do not post wiki errors in the official Discord's #support, #content-report, or #bug-report channels. The wiki isn't run/maintained by staff, so if something on the wiki doesn't match up in-game, it is a wiki error, not a game error.

Game Related

Quite a few of these and other frequently asked questions involve commands that are listed on this page. It'd be a good idea to look at it.

Why can't I log in despite making an account?

If you made an account on the forums and tried logging into the game client with those credentials, it will not work because the two accounts aren't linked. You need to create an account within the client.

Does PMU work on Windows 11?

Yes.

Is there a story to follow? What am I supposed to do?

There's no plot in the game, aside from side-stories in certain dungeons. When you first start it's recommended that you focus on getting HMs and the ability to evolve, and then make goals for yourself from there. The earliest/easiest dungeon you can get an HM is at Sour Root Cave.

Is there a map?

A fanmade pixel map can be viewed here https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/pmysteryuniverse/images/4/43/Map.png/revision/latest?cb=20230830105001&format=original.

Downsized 1:1 maps of entire regions can be found on their respective articles.

For a minimap, press ButtonM.png in-game.

How do I evolve?

You have to beat the boss in Cliffside Relic for an Engraved Tablet, then head over to the Faded Relic in Exbel.

How do I heal?

Outside of items and moves there's various healing spots around the game. The most accessible one is at the Crossroads. They are usually also found at rest stops.

How do I chat?

You'll notice a bar that says "Channel:", and a dropdown where the channel can be changed from and to either Local, Global, or Guild. Clicking the box above the bar will allow you to type and send messages. Adding an apostrophe (') at the beginning of messages sends them to the Global channel automatically.

How do I PM someone?

In the chat box, type !"[player's username]" "Your message". Quotes are required if their username or your message has spaces beyond the space that separates the name and your message. It's just best to use quotes regardless.

Can I play with other people?

Yes. Someone needs to use the command /cp or /createparty. Anyone who wants to join that party (up to three others) will need to stand adjacent to them and type the command /jp or /joinparty, following their username. You'll then be able to go to dungeons together. Parties can be left using /lp or /leaveparty. There is also a party chat usable through the /p command.

How do I add a friend?

/addfr or /addfriend and then their username.

Are there missions/jobs?

Yes.

Why isn't there anything on my board?

At least one dungeon that is able to spawn missions needs to be completed. A mission will then be generated each time change. Make sure you are looking at the real mission board in Grassroot Town, and not in the Explorer's Bazaar.

Why am I not seeing my mission?

Before a mission actually shows up in a dungeon, you have to accept it through the Job List in the menu. It may also be an escort, which you need to have an open slot in your team for as escorts will need to join your team.

How do I increase my bag/storage?

By doing missions. You'll get points and rank up, eventually leading to a much bigger storage and bag space. It's suggested to take a look at the Missions page for more info.

Is there a way to sort storage/assembly/bag?

The only way to sort storage is by taking and putting back in every item in the order you want. Assembly can't be sorted, and the bag can be manually sorted by dragging and dropping item positions, along with switching the pages.

How do I get blue/yellow/green text above my name?

That text is above players when they're in a guild, depending on their position. Blue is member, yellow is admin, and green is founder.

How do I make/join a guild?

Refer to Guilds.

Can you revive or rescue other players?

There are some revival items that work on other players. Reviver Seeds, Revival Herbs, or other revival items that only work on yourself cannot be used to revive other players.

If you and someone else are in the same guild and meeting up wherever they are is applicable, it is then possible to use one of these revival items on them or deliver an escape item, etc. Otherwise, it is not possible to rescue fainted players.

How do I get text besides my name?

/status [text]. Max length is 24 characters.

How do I get a colored username?

Only members of the staff team get colored names, to distinguish them from regular players. You can read an official forum post about the staff team's roles and applications here.

How do I change my username?

You can't right now. There previously was a way to change usernames, but that is currently non-functional. Staff will still sometimes do manual minor name changes.

If I delete a character, can I reuse the name?

No.

Can you get/Is there X Pokémon/generation?

Refer to Pokémon Obtaining Guide.

Can you recruit Legendaries?

No, but you can however use them during a dungeon. See Summoning Pokémon for more information on that mechanic.

If you see somebody as one in-game outside of a dungeon, it's either because they are staff or are using a cosmetic item that makes them look like one.

Can you trade Pokémon with players?

No. There are two features close to giving Pokémon to one another: There is an Easter dungeon that allows players to spawn eggs that have a chance to hatch into the pre-evolution of a Pokémon, and if in a guild, a player can be escorted to someone else in order to let them try to recruit a Pokémon in that person's instance of a dungeon.

Otherwise, you cannot directly give or swap recruits with somebody.

How do you send a Pokémon home mid-dungeon?

In the Esc menu go to "Team" and select the Pokémon, then "Send Home". This cannot be done for the leader.

Is there fast travel?

You can quickly go to other regions once you teach Fly to a Pokémon and use the fly spot in the respective region's main town to go to The Sky.

You can also use rest stops, which are areas you can set to be spawned to whenever you use /giveup or leave or escape a dungeon.

Are there shiny Pokémon?

Yes.

What are the shiny rates?

We don't know beyond a few exceptions.

Rates outside of the ones listed are generally subject to change, and so they will not be shown on pages on the rare event that a specific Pokémon or dungeon's shiny rates are released.

Can your starter be shiny?

No.

Are there EVs/IVs/Natures?

No.

Are there Abilities?

Yes.

Do you have all your Abilities at once?

Yes.

Is there IQ?

The IQ mechanic is not in PMU. Gummis do exist, but they only fill Belly, alongside temporary stat increases and a special effect for that floor.

Are there Mega Evolutions?

No.

What game do movesets follow?

All Pokémon of Generation 7 and below have their Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon learnsets, with any other Pokémon having the learnset from their debut Generation.

How can I quickly use items without going into my inventory?

Items held by Pokémon can be used using the keys ButtonZ.png, ButtonX.png, ButtonC.png, and ButtonV.png, corresponding to the team slot order.

How does X move work?

See Moves and its subpages.

What does X item do?

See Items and its subpages.

Do X item effects stack?

For example "do exp items/MC and WC stack" or "do dusts/silk/crystals stack", etc. Generally items never stack with themselves.

Experience items will only stack in the case of one held item and one experience-boosting family item. Using more than one held experience-boosting item completely negates the boost of either held item.

A team held recruit rate item will stack only with a recruit rate item that applies to the active Pokémon.

Dusts, silks and crystals only stack in the sense that if a Pokémon is dual typed, they can benefit from the items of both of its respective types. A Dragon/Flying type will get boosts from one Sky Dust and one Dragon Dust, but not two Sky Dusts.

Why is my house a grey void? How do I put things in it?

Houses are basically your own personal map. Think of any of the overworld maps; your house allows you to make your own using the various tiles in the game.

How do I leave my house?

/lh or /leavehouse.

How do I leave the arena?

/gup or /giveup.

How do I make the game bigger/fullscreen?

There's no way to enlarge the game but there's technically a fullscreen option.

While at the main menu, click the server select button, and once you do that you can press F11 (may require you to hold Shift or Ctrl as well) and your game will have black bars around it. Pressing F11 while actually in-game will activate the screenshot function instead.

Using the magnifying tool while playing PMU is a way some players deal with the small screen size.

Why is the color of the game weird?

PMU has a time mechanic, and the time of the day affects the color of certain maps in-game.

How do I get/use a skin/is there an X skin?

Skins and guidance on making them can be downloaded or found in their category on the forums.

Can I play PMU on X OS?

There's only official support for Windows. There are ways to make it work on non-Windows platforms, but it isn't and won't be covered here.

Can I remap the controls?

You can only change the keys you use to move and run with. Refer to Controls and Commands#Custom Controls.

Is there a way to set up a controller for PMU?

There's a guide on the forums that includes a recommended configuration you can try and an AutoHotKey script to add ease to switching Pokémon.

How do I log out?

There's no log out button, so simply close the game. It will save every time you're disconnected. You can also use /save to save on demand.

What's the server restart? Will I lose progress?

No progress is reset. It's a daily restart that happens at 2:30 AM EST/3:30 AM DST. Certain changes to the game are applied after it happens, but it's also a general maintenance task and the server comes up within a few minutes max.

What can I do for account issues like forgetting my details?

You can receive help fairly quickly if you message the modmail bot in the Discord server.

I like the game. Can I contribute in any way?

And obviously, you can also help by editing this wiki; fixing mistakes or helping them get fixed and improving it.

What language is PMU programmed in?

If you're considering applying for a programmer spot, PMU is written in C#, and it runs on its own custom engine.

Bug, Glitch, and Oddity Related

This answers frequent problems players run into.

I'm having an issue installing the game. How can I fix it?

If your installer is stuck on any particular part, try one of the following:

  • Closing the installer (use Task Manager if it won't simply through clicking the X on the window) and:
    • If stuck on "Updating component registration", just opening the game
    • Running it again
      • Running it as an admin
    • Deleting the PMU folder it created and running it again
  • Changing the installation directory/location
  • Using the portable .zip that doesn't require installation here

The PMU .zip is downloading slow. Is there a mirror?

Alternative download here.

Why can't I open the zip?

Some players encounter error 0x80004005 when extracting PMU's zip using Windows' built in zipping algorithm. It is usually solved by using the program 7-Zip to unzip it instead. If that doesn't work, post on the Discord or forums with the specific error or problem that occurs.

Where's the .exe? Is this malware? Why is my antivirus warning me?

No, Pokémon Mystery Universe isn't a virus. PMU's methods to protect the game end up making some antiviruses falsely flag the .exe and delete it or similar. If you experience this, find out how to add an exception of the PMU folder to your antivirus or disable it entirely and restore the .exe.

When PMU or your computer updates you may have to redo this.

Why don't inputted keys match my keyboard/How do I put an @?

If you're having trouble signing up, Shift + 2 inserts an @ character.

PMU's keyboard layout always matches that of an American, QWERTY keyboard. If your keyboard is not QWERTY, what you see on your keys will be different than what's actually inputted in PMU. Because of this, also be cautious when creating your password.

Why can't I add my Pokémon to my team?

It's likely you have an HP boosting family item for the Pokémon on you. It must be removed from your bag first.

Why do I get stuck at the assembly?

This sometimes happens when you change your leader while it is your active Pokémon. Attacking or swapping Pokémon if you have any on your team still should let you move again.

Why does it say I'm already playing when I'm not?

We call that "YAAP" ("You are already playing!"). It sometimes happens when disconnected from the server when it's not due to a server restart. It's resolved after a few seconds-minutes of waiting, so it is not suggested to ping staff in the Discord unless you urgently need to log back in immediately, such as due to dungeon wind.

I can still log in but the windows block my view?

It is unknown why this happens or how to completely fix it, though its said to go away after the daily restart. You can click and drag the titlebars of the windows to move them as a workaround.

I'm stuck somewhere or the map looks funny?

That's usually due to the game loading maps. Wait it out and/or use the command /refresh (or press ButtonEnd.png). If that fails you can also use the /giveup command, which teleports you to the Crossroads or your spawn point.

Why can't I enter dungeons?

If you try to enter a dungeon and you only see a white exclamation point (!) pop up by your Pokémon with no prompt, restart the game.

What can I do if I see an error on a map, sprite, or a typo in text?

Make a thread in the Discord's #content-report channel, or in the case of map errors you could also post it in this forum topic.

Why did I crash or get this error popup?

The game is still a work in progress. Crashes and errors with the program itself will get fixed at some point, and it is likely someone has brought up one of the errors you got before or staff already know.

For example, you might crash while trying to log in, which is a well known error. That specific error being "Object reference not set to an instance of an object." can also happen during normal gameplay. In any case, unless the error makes you unable to play, it's probably a common one and not worth reporting.

How do I fix the @btnLogin error?

This specific error will make the game unplayable. If you have or know anyone who has this error, please refer to this guide on the forums.

Why did my Alolan starter turn normal?

Unfortunately, you can't start as the Alolan variant of Meowth or Vulpix. Them showing up is a visual bug. They can still be recruited later in the game.

I went into a level reset dungeon and my Pokémon are still X level?!

This is a visual bug. Try removing the Pokémon from your team and adding them back or using /giveup.

I beat a boss but there's no warp or way to escape?

Restart the game.

Why did the screen bug out/freeze during a boss cutscene?

This happens when the story bugs out, usually by the player switching Pokémon or using certain moves, messing up movement. Restarting the game tends to help, but in a case where you used a move that prevents movement, you should be able to continue the move by pressing F until it is done. If all fails get staff assistance.

ZOMG why wasn't there a chamber/key spawn? The wiki lied and sucks!

That's due to the way the generation for dungeons works. If a given floor has too few or small rooms, whatever chamber that should or might have spawned couldn't. A staff member will warp you to a new instance of the floor if this happens.

Why can't I place tiles in my house?

When you use the /edithouse command, there is an attributes tab; if you exit the map editor on that tab, you won't be able to place any tiles because the game still thinks you want to place attributes, as when you enter /edithouse again, it opens the terrain panel rather than the attributes panel. Simply switching to the attributes tab and back to the tiles will allow you to place tiles again.
